On the occasion of the regional elections in the Free State of Saxony, the ECPMF runs a campaign named #ichwähleFakten (#iVoteForFacts).
The campaign aims to shed light on the problem of disinformation and to advocate for press freedom in Saxony – the home of the ECPMF. In addition to the social media campaign, we visit campaign events ahead of the elections in order to discuss the candidates’ positions regarding media freedom in Saxony.
The past elections in Germany and Europe made one thing clear: there is an increasing use of disinformation in order to influence voters and their electoral behaviour. During the EU election campaign 2019, 60,000 false reports have been liked or shared in Germany (source: Oxford Internet Institute).
Another really concerning issue are physical attacks against journalists. ECPMF’s study “Feindbild Journalist” (Journalists as enemies) from 2018 found that there were 26 physical attacks on journalists in Germany in 2018, 14 of them in Saxony. Most of the attacks occurred around right-wing demonstrations. A free press has the function of reporting from demonstrations, checking facts and contributing to the people’s decision-making. If journalists are being prohibited from doing their work, it means a fundamental cut in democratic rights. In times when right-populist movements are increasing, standing up for the rule of law gets more important than ever.
Ahead of the regional elections, a statement needs to be made for factuality during pre-electional campaigns and for press freedom – not only in Saxony, but also in Brandenburg, Thuringia and the whole of Germany.
