The European Centre for Press and Media Freedom (ECPMF) has joined the Coalition against Transnational Repression in Germany, a network of human rights and diaspora organisations working to address the growing threat of transnational repression (TNR). The coalition aims to raise awareness of the impact of TNR on human rights, freedom and security in Germany, while promoting stronger protection mechanisms, support for those affected, and greater engagement from policymakers, authorities and civil society.
ECPMF is grateful to become part of this important initiative, which brings together organisations committed to tackling the cross-border nature of repression. Transnational repression increasingly affects journalists and human rights defenders who continue to face intimidation, surveillance and harassment even after fleeing their home countries. Addressing this challenge requires coordinated action across borders and sectors.
Through its Journalists-in-Exile (JiE) programme, ECPMF works closely with journalists who have sought refuge in Germany, gaining direct insight into the realities and consequences of TNR. These experiences inform ECPMF’s advocacy and underline the urgent need for stronger safeguards to ensure that those at risk can rebuild their lives and continue their work safely.
By joining the coalition, ECPMF will contribute to amplifying the voices of those affected, strengthening collective advocacy efforts, and pushing for more robust legal and policy responses at both national and European level to better protect media freedom.
