I am an Arabic-speaking writer, podcaster and performance artist. I became known through my podcast “Tiklam”, which has almost ten million streams to date. In “Tiklam” I read literary finds from all over the world and set them to music. In my own works, I deal with everyday situations and absurdities that arise while the world falls apart. I live and work in Berlin.
I was born in Damascus, Syria, in 1988, the son of an interior decorator. I ran my own curtain business at the age of 19. I also studied mathematics at Damascus University, curated and recited contemporary poetry for a weekly literary programme on Radio Jerusalem (إذاعة القدس) and published my first book in 2011, the short story collection “This Marble Broke” (هذا الرخام تشققق) and in 2011 my award-winning short story “Tell me about God” (حدثني عن الله).
In 2012, shortly before graduating, I had to flee to Jordan and was trained as a multimedia journalist by Syria Direct. I then worked as an editor for Syria Direct and Al-Bawaba, as a freelance reporter for the news channel Al-Balad and as a freelance writer for The New Arab, 7iber, Ultrasawt, Al-Joumhouria and many more. In 2013, I published my second book, the poetry collection “The Taste of Bab Sharqi” (مذاق باب شرقي).i In 2015, I founded “Tiklam”, the world’s largest podcast for Arabic-language literature to date. I now produce my own music for my recitations and my own visuals for social media versions. I have also developed similar literary formats for organisations such as Flanders Literature, Al-Mawred and Al-Jasrah.
In 2017, I came to Germany as part of a scholarship from Heinrich-Böll-Haus Langenbroich e.V. Since then, I have focussed entirely on my literary work. In 2018, I published a book about Syrian poetry in exile, “Nakhaal Al-Khutta” (نخال الخطى), in collaboration with Ettijahat, an organisation that promotes independent culture. In 2020, Edition Rugerup published my first book in German, the poetry collection “Das Gedächtnis der Finger”.
In 2024, Rowohlt will publish an exchange of letters with the journalist Vanessa Vu, “Komm dahin, wo es still ist”. I also experiment with performance art that combines poetry with dance. For example, I worked with performance artist Charlotte Triebus on “Push” (Heinrich-Böll-Haus Kreuzau, 2018), with poet Ulrike Almut Sandig on “Klangkörper” (Literaturhaus Berlin, 2022) and with musician Abdullah Miniawy on “Die Ordnung der Klänge” (Literaturfestival Stuttgart, 2023).
