To know the threats that journalists and media workers across Europe face, we need to be able to capture information about violations in real time. As part of the MFRR, Mapping Media Freedom (MMF) is an innovative platform that maps media freedom violations across Europe. In 2020, Mapping Media Freedom published 378 alerts documenting violations of media freedom across 29 countries in Europe, targeting 1159 journalists, media workers, outlets or other relevant actors. Thanks to MMF, we get a clearer and more accurate picture of the threats journalists face and the overall health of the media freedom landscape but we need everyone to speak up and speak out in defence of media freedom.
All alerts are verified by the MFRR monitoring partners, European Federation of Journalists and the International Press Institute, but the MFRR depends on alerts being shared from journalists, media workers, campaigners and members of the public from across Europe. This workshop will offer an introduction to the platform, how you can use it to upload alerts and search for other published alerts. This will be led by ECPMF and InfAI and aims to ensure everyone is able to play an active role in monitoring and protecting against media freedom violations across Europe. This will require no previous monitoring or technological experience.
